Carlos Alcaraz lost in the Miami semifinals

After the three-set defeat against Jannik Sinner in the semifinals of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Miami, Carlos Alcaraz had to vacate his place at the top of the world rankings on Monday. Novak Djokovic, who missed the Sunshine Double in the US due to not being vaccinated against the coronavirus, will tackle the upcoming clay-court season as an industry leader.

Despite not being able to defend his title, Alcaraz found a lot of positive things about his performances in Florida. "It's hard to put into words, but I think it was a great match between us. It was a really tough, physical game," said the 19-year-old, who beat Sinner in the Indian Wells semifinals .

Alcaraz misses the preliminary decision

In Miami, Sinner now had the better end for himself. The sticking point: In the second set, Alcaraz missed a break chance to make it 5: 3. "I had my chances to break in the second set and win the match, but it's always a tough fight against Sinner," said last year's US Open winner.

In any case, Alcaraz only had words of praise for his opponent. Which ultimately ended in a "threat" to Sinner. "All I can think about is improving my level to beat Jannik," explained the Spaniard, who had to accept the equalizer to make it 3-3 after the semi-final defeat in the official head-to-head.

Special energy from the spectators

The rivalry between Alcaraz and Sinner is likely to be one of the most formative on the ATP tour in the coming years. A circumstance that will probably also have a positive effect on fan interest. "When I play against Jannik, I feel that there is something different with the spectators. I think this match will probably be followed around the world because I think it's really nice to watch," said Alcaraz.

He will continue with the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Monte Carlo from April 9th. The 19-year-old didn't mourn the missed chance to win the Sunshine Double for long. "I think I'll still have a few years to do it," said Alcaraz.
