The US team could have used an additional specialist, the substitute was left empty-handed in tennis competitions. However, Gauff could not travel to Japan: She tested positive for the corona virus. And also had to struggle with symptoms, as she said on the sidelines of an exhibition match as part of the ATP Tour 500 tournament in Washington.

The US capital was actually always a fixed point of contact in the WTA calendar. This year, however, only the men play a tournament in which you can actually win points for the world rankings. Gauff has to be content with an exhibition match, where she won against Victoria Azarenka.

The teenager has not yet fully recovered. Her symptoms wouldn't have been too bad, but: “I've still lost my sense of smell. Otherwise, however, I'm fine. ”The problem is simply traveling from country to country, which is still in store for her after the Saturday performance in Washington against Jessica Pegula. Then it goes on to Montréal.

Cori Gauff is not one of the immediate favorites there, especially not with the lack of training over the last few days. After Naomi Osaka, Iga Swiatek and Sofia Kenin canceled, a deep run in Canada cannot be ruled out. The field is led by Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus.
