Ex-professional David Ferrer replaces Sergi Bruguera as captain of the Spanish Davis Cup team. This was announced by the tennis association RFET on Thursday. Ferrer (40) is to oversee the selection of the six-time title holder over the next three years. As a player he was involved in Spain's triumphs in the traditional team competition three times (2008, 2009, 2011).
Under Bruguera, who was also part of the coaching team of Olympic champion Alexander Zverev (Hamburg) in 2022, Spain lost to Croatia in the quarter-finals of the final tournament in Malaga at the end of November. The hosts had to do without their two top players Carlos Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal, currently number one and two in the world rankings.
Ferrer also worked briefly with Zverev in 2020. As a player, the clay court specialist collected 27 ATP titles and reached number three in the world rankings as well as the final of the 2013 French Open, which he clearly lost to Nadal.
