Both the hard-working tennis journalist and the common tennis fan have questions after questions when it comes to what the decisive points were that the now legendary Davis Cup contract between the Spanish sports agency Kosmos and the International Tennis Federation (ITF) finally went far was terminated before the targeted 25-year period. Exactly how the rupture came about may never be fully revealed.
Because ITF President David Haggerty, who is currently at the Davis Cup duel between Croatia and Austria in Rijeka, was deliberately silent when asked by the Austrian daily newspaper "Der Standard" on the subject. And with good reason, as the American explained: "I can't talk about the reasons because I'm contractually bound to secrecy."
"It has proven itself"
What the 65-year-old is trying to assure: "We made sure the ITF kept the competition going." However, the highest official in international tennis does not want to look too far into the future - after all, there is more than enough to do with the event in the current year. However, as of today, Haggerty considers a return to the old international format to be practically impossible in the years that follow.
In general, the North American is convinced that the change in format was fundamentally correct. Because, according to Haggerty, the "New Davis Cup" has caught on with both the players and the fans: "It has proven itself." The American is not a fan of the idea of no longer holding the competition annually: "We have an annual competition and that is also important for qualifying for the Olympic Games."
Even if Haggerty turns good mine into bad game - the clock is ticking and a lot seems to be hidden in the fog at the most renowned team competition in tennis. In September, the ITF will also elect a new President. In addition to the DTB President Dietloff von Arnim, the mid-sixties will also stand for re-election.
