David Ferrer took the liberty of sharing a little bit about his Davis Cup past and also praising the current week in Malaga. Ferrer has won the most traditional team competition in tennis with Spain three times. Mark Woodforde, also present at the draw for the 2023 world group, has at least one Davis Cup triumph in his résumé.
A few things were already certain before the draw was made: The two finalists in 2022, Australia and Canada, have definitely qualified for the intermediate round next September. In addition, Spain and Italy have received a wild card for this round, so they do not have to go to the first qualifying phase either.
And this draw brought the worst possible draw for Jürgen Melzer's team: it's off to Croatia. The Croatians only lost out to Australia in the semifinals this week, have two world-class players in singles in Marin Cilic and Borna Coric and one of the best doubles games in the world in Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic.
