Denis Shapovalov didn't go without drama on Sunday either. And so Shapovalov led in the first match of the Davis Cup final in Málaga against Thanasi Kokkinakis 6: 2 and 5: 2, could have served relaxed. But the Australian didn't want to end it that early. And came back to 3:5 with the first of two necessary re-breaks.
A few moments Shapovalov did better, winning service to 15. And giving Canada a 1-0 lead. Now Félix Auger-Aliassime has the chance in the second singles against Alex de Minaur to secure Canada's first Davis Cup title ever.
For Denis Shapovalov, the first individual success in this final tournament was overdue: In the quarter-finals he lost to Jan-Lennard Struff in the tie-break of the third set. Shapovalov was also unable to score against Lorenzo Sonego in the semifinals. After all: Compared to Germany, he got the decisive point alongside Vasek Pospisil.
