Davis Cup: Germany relies on the winning team from Hamburg

Michael Kohlmann has nominated the team for the Davis Cup finals from November 22nd to 27th, 2022 in Malaga. Oscar Otte, Jan-Lennard Struff, Yannick Hanfmann, Tim Pütz and Kevin Krawietz make up the German team that meets Canada in the quarterfinals on November 24th. At the moment it doesn't look like Alexander Zverev will be ready for action again until the Davis Cup.

The Davis Cup captain is relying on the team that qualified for the finals with the group win at the Davis Cup Finals Group Stage at Rothenbaum. "These players convinced in Hamburg and deserve to continue the journey together in Malaga. The team has developed an unbelievable sense of togetherness over the past few years, which, coupled with our quality of play, makes us an uncomfortable opponent for any nation. With Félix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov, Canada have two world-class players on their team who will demand everything from us. We're certainly not the favourites, but we're looking forward to this challenge. We've proven often enough that we can keep up with the best and, like last year, we want to reach at least the semi-finals," said Kohlmann.

"We don't need to hide"

Oscar Otte, who made his Davis Cup debut in the group stage in Hamburg, again leads the German team – in the absence of Zverev – as number one. “Although Oscar has only been here this year, he is already an important part of the team. After his injury break, he gets better from match to match. Despite the defeat, he played a great game against Auger-Aliassime in Florence,” says Kohlmann.

Kohlmann nominated Jan-Lennard Struff as the second individual player, who with his three wins in Hamburg was a decisive factor in reaching the quarter-finals. “Winning the group in Hamburg in front of a home crowd was a great success for the team. I'm happy to be part of the team in Malaga now. In Canada we have a difficult opponent who plays in a strong line-up. We look forward to this task and don't need to hide," said Struff.

Yannick Hanfmann completes the line-up of single players. "Yannick has shown good performances in recent weeks and, among other things, reached the final of the Challenger tournament in Rio de Janeiro. With his willingness to step in immediately in Hamburg, he also represents what we embody as a team: cohesion and team spirit," says Kohlmann, explaining his choice.

In doubles, the decision again fell on Tim Pütz and Kevin Krawietz: "The two showed great, exciting matches in Hamburg and secured the decisive point for us in each case. They have proven time and time again that they are among the very best in the world and that we can rely on them in tight situations. That's a very good feeling," Kohlmann continued. Krawietz and Pütz are still undefeated in the Davis Cup.
