Davis Cup: Kevin Krawietz and Tim Pütz - they just don't have voodoo in their program

The mood was relaxed late on Friday evening at the German team's press conference after the 2-1 win over Belgium. And why not? Kevin Krawietz and Tim Pütz, the doubles heroes who are still undefeated in the Davis Cup, took team boss Michael Kohlmann in the middle, and the German team was allowed to play once more in Hamburg. On Sunday against Australia, however, it is "only" about who finishes Group C first or second, which in turn determines who Germany will play against in the final tournament in Malaga.
Yes, the minimum goal for the DTB selection has already been reached after two matchdays at Rothenbaum. And that without the playful help of Alexander Zverev. Germany was also in the quarterfinals a year ago, also without Zverev, who was only able to warm to the new format when the venue Hamburg and the date directly after the US Open were drawn.
The venue and date seem to be irrelevant to Kevin Krawietz and Tim Pütz. The two simply win their matches. There are now seven in number, I thought I even reminded Krawietz of one more. But the ITF statistics don't lie. Perhaps the Munich player also included a game with his tour partner Andreas Mies, with whom he is still undefeated in the Davis Cup.
Krawietz and Pütz catch up
Against Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen in the tie-break of the third set with a score of 2:5 it looked like the series was about to come to an end. Five points later, that was no longer the case. Not unhappy, as Pütz said. But maybe they would have earned this luck, says Krawietz.
Any explanations for the incredible run? In any case, they didn't perform any voodoo magic before their missions, Pütz stated. And came around the corner with an interesting theory: Maybe it will help that Krawietz and he are not at the start together on the ATP tour. Krawietz is hired out there with Mies, while Pütz and partner Michael Venus are on their way to the ATP Finals.
Loss in Tokyo to Murray and Salisbury
In the current constellation, the appearances in the Davis Cup are something special, maybe that's where the magic comes from. In any case, Pütz can guarantee one thing: if he and Krawietz played a hundred matches on the tour, there would also be a few defeats. At the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2021 it would not have been enough to get a medal. Then came the end against Andy Murray and Joe Salisbury in round two. By the way, the two Britons are playing together in Glasgow these days - and lost both doubles against the USA and the Netherlands.
But Kevin Krawietz and Tim Pütz are still wearing their clean slate. And play tomorrow against the reigning Wimbledon champions Max Purcell and Matthew Ebden. Are there any empirical values? He must have played against one of them before, Krawietz explained as relaxed as he was unsure about the matter. Which that was, he left open. Puetz could not help much. Which will not play a role in the final game of the Hamburg Davis Cup weekend. Kevin Krawietz and Tim Pütz take it as it comes. And so far it's always gone well.
