The Russian war against Ukraine also has a major impact on many tennis players. Dayana Yastremska, formerly number 21 in the world, has declared via Instagram that she has now left the country.
"After two nights in an underground parking garage, my parents made the decision to bring me and my little sister from Ukraine," she wrote.
Yastremska: Via Romania and Hungary to France
As ESPN reports , her family brought her to the port of Izmail, from where she was able to take a boat to Romania with her sister. "I don't know how this war will end," her father explained, "but you also have to take care of yourself, strive for your dreams, build your new life and always be there for yourselves."
Yastremska and her family ran into the parking garage in their home town of Odessa after the first attacks on Thursday, after what appeared to be calm back to their apartment, where they heard on television that things were getting worse. "We have to get you out of here," her father explained. The borders to Moldova were closed, then people heard about people fleeing to Romania on a boat.
"Got to take care of my sister"
In the meantime, the 21-year-old has arrived in Lyon by plane via Hungary, where she wants to play the WTA tournament next week. Her parents are doing well at the moment, she explained, they are still hiding in the underground car park.
What's next after Lyon? "I have no idea. We have to see what's happening in Ukraine, what's happening in my city. I have to think about my sister, about her safety," said Yastremska.
