Dominic Thiem and Florida - No big love story yet
Before it goes onto the European sand, Dominic Thiem is still playing for important world ranking points at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Miami. Things didn't always go well for the Austrian in Florida.

First of all: The ATP Tour is very concerned that from a historical point of view one is also talking about the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Miami. But of course the inclined tennis fan knows that this event took place in Key Biscayne until 2018. And only moved over to Miami for the 2019 edition. For the really big matches in the Hard Rock Stadium, for everyone else in the parking lot in front of it.
So if you look at Dominic Thiem's story very explicitly in Miami, there is exactly one match there: In 2019 the Austrian arrived from Indian Wells as the newly crowned champion. And failed right from the start due to Hubert Hurkacz, who didn't play quite as well back then as he does today, but who, if you can remember, was able to win the title in Miami 2021.
Overall, Dominic Thiem's record in Key Biscayne and Miami, combined with seven wins and five losses, looks positive. Whether you can expect a noticeable improvement in this ratio from the coming week will certainly depend on the draw. Thiem is placed in the main draw with a wildcard, and a cracker could be waiting in the second round at the latest.
As in the past...
- In 2014, Thiem served in Key Biscayne for the first time and qualified for the main draw with victories against Rhyne Williams and Peter Polansky. There, the Lower Austrian wins the first match against Lukas Rosol, but is eliminated against Tommy Robredo.
- 2015 is Dominic Thiem's best run so far: It starts with a win against Diego Schwartzman, with successes against Feliciano Lopez, Jack Sock and, attention, Adrian Mannarino, Thiem reaches the quarterfinals. But where he lost against Andy Murray 6: 3, 4: 6 and 1: 6.
- In 2016, Thiem beat Sam Groth and Yoshihito Nishioka smoothly after a bye, but had no chance against Novak Djokovic in the round of 16.
- In 2017, at Dominic Thiem's last guest appearance in Key Biscayne, Borna Coric proved to be too strong right from the start after a bye.
- Dominic Thiem was not at the start in 2018, nor in 2021 and 2022.
