Dominic Thiem will also stop in Belgrade when he returns to the ATP tour. The Austrian was a guest there almost two years ago, at the invitation of Novak Djokovic for his Adria Tour. Thiem has now named the ATP Tour 250 event, which will take place parallel to the 500 in Barcelona from April 18 to 24, 2022. It can be assumed that the Austrian number one will return to the tournament before that, for example in Monte Carlo.

Novak Djokovic himself, who will take over the top of the ATP world rankings from Daniil Medvedev next Monday, will be the tournament favorite in Belgrade. Also expected are Gael Monfils, Fabio Fognini or Sebastian Korda, who a few days ago had Rafael Nadal on the verge of defeat in Indian Wells.

It is not yet clear when exactly Thiem's comeback can be expected. The 28-year-old actually wanted to return at the beginning of the year with the ATP Cup and the Australian Open, after which the return to the South American clay court tour was pushed back, and when that didn't work either, Thiem and his team targeted Indian Wells. Only to signal just before the start of the tournament that this was still too early after the lengthy recovery from the wrist injury.
