The bottom line is that Dominic Thiem also has an early exit this week. The way in which the 29-year-old presented himself in Monte Carlo should give Austrian tennis fans hope. "The week was great," the 2020 US Open winner also drew a positive conclusion.

In particular, Thiem seems to like working with the new coaching team around Benjamin Ebrahimzadeh. "The chemistry with the new people is very good. It was only four or five days, but they were great," explained the former third in the world rankings, who after his opening win over Richard Gasquet in round two against later finalist Holger Rune, especially in the second sentence made a good impression.

"I'll see that next time I can handle the pace against people like that from the start," said Thiem after the 2: 6 and 4: 6 defeat. A reunion with Rune could come as early as next week. For that, however, the Lower Austrian would have to reach the final in Munich.

In the foreseeable future, Thiem wants to play for titles again. "I trained a lot and had a good volume," explained the Lichtenwörther. "But there are still a lot of things that don't fit. I just have to get rid of them - with the goal of Paris, so that I can play very, very well there again."
