Sylt in autumn is not the classic beach holiday for the successful tennis pro after a long season (like Denis Shapovalov quickly put in with his girlfriend before the final round in the Davis Cup). But as we all know in Northern Germany: there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing. And according to his pictures on Instagram, Dominic Thiem did everything right in his short recovery phase.

But now it's time for work again. Jez Green will take over the regime for the coming days, as Thiem explained on Monday evening on ServusTV in “Sport and Talk in Hangar 7”. "We will only do fitness for a week, not pick up the tennis racket yet, and then combine it," said the US Open champion of 2020. Thiem had already announced in Vienna that he would talk about himself and his fitness -Coach expect nothing less than to go into the coming season as a "machine".

Thiem ends the season after Vienna

It can be assumed that this will start with participation in the main draw of the Australian Open. Thiem didn't quite make the top 100, but just above it should be good enough. Especially since late cancellations are no exception, for whatever reason.

At ServusTV, Dominic Thiem also reflected on the tennis year 2022, which he completed with 561 points after losing at the Erste Bank Open against Daniil Medvedev. A place where Thiem actually always felt extremely comfortable left special scars: the Stade Roland Garros. "Paris was a place I only had good memories of, where I had often traveled in the past when I was not in good shape - and then everything turned positive there," explained Thiem.

In a team with Zverev

"But as it turns out, things haven't gotten any better there. That's why I see the tournament as the low point of this season." As a reminder: Dominic Thiem failed in round one because of Hugo Dellien. The picturesque ambience of the Court Simonne-Mathieu was not able to alleviate the pain.

In 2023 everything should be back on track. The season begins for Dominic Thiem in mid-December with an exhibition fight in Saudi Arabia, in which Alexander Zverev and Daniil Medvedev also take part. Then it's off to Dubai for a team competition (again with Zverev). Austria is not qualified for the United Cup. But Thiem will certainly find alternatives to warm up for the Australian Open.
