Bang in Dominic Thiem's team: As the Austrian announced on social media on Saturday evening, the Austrian has parted ways with long-term trainer Nicolas Massu. The Chilean had been the Lower Austrian's trainer since 2019, and the coach-player team had reached number three in the ATP charts, won an ATP Masters 1000 title in Indian Wells and the US Open title 2020.
"What an incredible journey together," wrote Thiem in an emotional post on Instagram. "It all started in spring 2019 - you came in with your incredible energy and extreme love for the sport. That's how we won the US Open and Indian Wells," said the Austrian. "But we've also reached the finals of the Australian Open, the French Open and twice the Nitto ATP Finals. I think that shows we're an incredible team."
Thiem and Massu separate with immediate effect
"But unfortunately everything has an end and this is coming now," Thiem explained the joint decision. "We decided together that we will go our separate ways from next week," explained Thiem. "Thank you from the bottom of my heart for this incredible and beautiful time Nico. I wish you all the best and our friendship will last forever."
Nicolas Massu was still in the Austrian's box at Estoril's ATP 250 event, and the duo had not really got going together in the 2023 season. In Portugal, the 29-year-old managed at least two wins in a row before suffering another setback in the quarterfinals against Quentin Halys.
It is currently still unclear who will succeed Nicolas Massu as Dominic Thiem's coach.
