Thiem currently has 7,045 points and is only behind Novak Djokovic (10,220) and Rafael Nadal (9,850). Thiem benefits from Roger Federer's injury-related time-out : the Swiss lost his 500 points from last year's victory in Dubai, currently only getting 6,630 points.
However, Thiem has to defend a proud 1,000 points from his tournament victory in 2019 at the upcoming Masters tournament in Indian Wells. Federer cannot pass him - he also has 600 points to make up for the final, but is out - Thiem would stay in front of Federer even if he got out early. However, there is competition lurking behind with Daniil Medvedev (currently 5,890 points). The man from Moscow "only" has to defend the third round in Indian Wells.
