Dominic Thiem remarked two things about Jez Green during the Erste Bank Open in Vienna: First, that the fitness guru will help him after the well-deserved short vacation to start the new season as a "machine". Not much was missing this year either, but maybe something is still possible. And: That Green works with him in blocks. And thus also have the capacity to take care of other athletes. Just like in the summer with Karolina Pliskova. And now also about Emma Raducanu.
The 2021 US Open champion brought Green onto her team to work on athletic deficits. In fact, over the past two years, Raducanu has been sidelined almost more often by injuries than by her opponents. The Briton had to end the season, which is now coming to an end, due to a problem with her wrist, the final round of the Billie Jean King Cup in Glasgow will take place without Raducanu.
Raducanu with a slightly negative balance
That also hurts Anne Keothavong, the British team boss. However, the former top 100 player was able to announce some good news to the BBC. "Emma invests a lot, she looks super fit," says Keothavong. "She has done a lot of physical work in the gym and I believe she will be a stronger player in the coming year."
All in all, the 2022 tennis season was rather average. Raducanu won 17 singles matches, lost 18 of them. In Seoul she reached the semifinals, but had to give up against Jelena Ostapenko there. That makes position 76 in the WTA charts in the end. Which will certainly lead to additional motivation at Jez Green.
