It's nice that from the summer of 2015, not only Dominic Thiem's blonde hair, which he came up with on vacation with Dennis Novak, is remembered. No, there are also victories at the two ATP Tour 250 tournaments in Umag and Gstaad, especially in two consecutive weeks. And missed the triple in Kitzbühel a few days later.
But first things first: Thiem had won his first career title in the week before the French Open, in Nice in the tiebreak of the third set in the final against Leonardo Mayer. In Paris, the end came in round two against Pablo Cuevas, and not much was going in the right direction on the grass. Neither did the Davis Cup weekend in Kitzbühel against the Netherlands. Thiem coached like a berserk during the week under coach Günter Bresnik, but lost his two singles against Thiemo de Bakker and Robin Haase.
Monfils loses to Thiem
With three defeats en suite in his luggage, Thiem traveled to Umag - and after a walk in round one, initially benefited from two injury-related tasks. At first Dusan Lajovic could not hold out against Thiem until the end, afterwards Andreas Haider-Maurer suffered the same fate. Thiem was in the lead in both matches, when nobody asked for more in the semi-final against Gael Monfils . Thiem won this game (as well as all others against the French) and the final against one of his favorite opponents Joao Sousa.
The celebrations for the second title win on the tour were very modest. "I will have a quick dinner with my friends this evening to celebrate," said Thiem at the award ceremony. "It won't be a big party for me because I have to drive to Gstaad for eight hours tomorrow."
Thiem defeats feared opponent Goffin
Where Thiem, once again after a walk-through, first defeated Federico Delbonis in two sets, against the two Spaniards Pablo Carreno Busta and Feliciano Lopez over the full distance. In the final, David Goffin, from Thiem's perspective, waited for the anti-sousa, the Austrian won 7: 5 and 6: 2 against his fear opponent.
Dominic Thiem was denied the historic summer triple: In Kitzbühel, the later champion Philipp Kohlschreiber ended in the semifinals, Thiem missed his chance to equalize after a weak first set in round two in the tie-break with a double fault. Austria's number one won the title in the Gamsstadt just four years later. Without blond hair.
