Unfortunately, the pictures from Rome were not deceiving: Simona Halep limped accompanied by her opponent Angelique Kerber from Campo Centrale in the Foro Italico. With a score of 6: 1 and 3: 3, the Romanian could not continue due to a thigh injury. And it is precisely this wound that prevents participation in the second major of the year, the French Open, which will start next Sunday in Paris. Halep announced via Twitter that she would not be able to serve in Roland Garros. With a heavy heart, as the 2018 winner explained.
The season so far had certainly not gone exactly as Halep wanted. At the Australian Open, the quarter-finals against Serena Williams ended , in Stuttgart Halep made it to the semifinals, where she lost to Aryna Sabalenka . In Madrid, Elise Mertens was a stumbling block in the round of 16.
Halep had defeated Sloane Stephens in the final of the French Open in 2018 after a set deficit, won her first major title. Twelve months earlier, the now 29-year-old had surprisingly lost in the final against Jelena Ostapenko after taking the lead. In 2019 Simona Halep then achieved her greatest coup at Wimbledon - when she won the most coveted trophy in tennis in a convincing manner in the final against Serena Williams.
