Unseeded Italian Martina Trevisan has become the first player to reach the quarterfinals of this year's French Open. The 28-year-old prevailed on Sunday in a hard-fought match over 1:59 hours 7:6 (12:10), 7:5 against Aljaksandra Sasnovich (Belarus). Sasnowitsch had thrown the three-time Grand Slam winner Angelique Kerber out of the tournament in the third round.

Trevisan had already reached the last eight in Paris in 2020. Her next opponent is US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez (Canada), who defeated Amanda Anisimova of the US 6-3 4-6 6-3. Ex-soccer player Thierry Henry also followed the match between the two North Americans on the Philippe-Chatrier court.

Fernandez caused a sensation in New York City last summer when she surprisingly reached the final of the US Open. Among other things, with victories against Kerber or Aryna Sabalenka. In 2019, the Canadian left-hander won the junior title in Roland Garros.
