French Open 2022: Nobody expected this finalist

One thing is already clear: whoever makes it into the final from the bottom half of the women's tableau, nobody was expecting this woman.

Martina Trevisan as a finalist in Paris 2022? Why not?

All right: Let's just guess Martina Trevisan. Because nothing is more important in tennis than self-confidence. And the Italian got enough of that with her first tournament win at the WTA last week in Rabat. On the other hand: Shouldn't Aliaksandra Sasnovich also go into the game with Trevisan with a super good feeling? After the Belarusian won against Angelique Kerber for the first time.

No, it's not easy in the lower half of the women's tableau at the French Open 2022, where at least Maria Sakkari should have entered as a semi-finalist, according to the setting as the opponent of defending champion Barbora Krejcikova. In fact, both are long gone, and a role as a favorite cannot be identified.

Stephens the only one with a Grand Slam title

Leylah Fernandez is the top-ranked player at number 17, followed by Cori Gauff. Fernandez, a surprising finalist at the US Open last year, will play against Amanda Anisimova on Sunday for a place in the quarterfinals. The latter was in the semi-finals in Roland Garros in 2019, losing to the eventual winner Ashleigh Barty. Gauff, in turn, has to deal with Elise Mertens, number 31.

And Sloane Stephens, who is the only one of the eight aspirants who has already won a major, greets from the bottom. And who came out of nowhere to a place in the round of 16 could have been kicked out in round one against Jule Niemeier. Will that be enough against Jil Teichman? The Swiss would be our second pick for the vacant place in the finals alongside Iga Swiatek. If only we hadn't decided on Martina Trevisan so early on.
