The 28-year-old from Neuwied was beaten 1:6, 5:7 by the "marathon woman" Katerina Siniakova from the Czech Republic in the semifinals on Saturday evening. Only a few hours earlier, Siniakova had won the quarter-finals against the Italian Jasmine Paolini 6: 2, 3: 6, 7: 6 (7: 5).

Friedsam could not rely on her serve in the duel with the Czech. In the first set, she failed to get through her service once in four attempts. In the second round she conceded two breaks, including the decisive one to 5:7. Siniakova converted her sixth match point after 1:29 hours. She had even been on the pitch for 2:36 hours against Paolini.

Consolation for the loser: With her first semi-final on the WTA tour since March 2020 in Lyon, Friedsam has climbed into the top 150 in the world rankings. Her best placement so far was 45th in August 2016.
