Shortly after Dominic Thiem, Gael Monfils also ended his season prematurely. As the Frenchman announced on Twitter on Friday, he will not start at his home tournament in Paris-Bercy and will "use the end of the year to prepare for the next season".
Monfils played his last match to date in August in Montreal, where he had to retire against Jack Draper due to a foot injury. He still feels "restricted" on the pitch, wrote the 36-year-old, who will end the season outside the top 50.
Monfils can look back on a messed-up season: After a strong start with the tournament victory in Adelaide and the quarter-finals at the Australian Open, the injury devil set in, and the Frenchman only played 21 matches in total in 2022. Off the pitch, Monfils was able to celebrate the birth of his first child .
