Fans of the spectacle breathe a sigh of relief: Gael Monfils is not yet thinking about retirement. The 36-year-old expects to compete in the Monte Carlo Masters, which begins on April 9 in the principality. The Frenchman returned to the tour in Indian Wells after six months out through injury, but lost his first game there to Jordan Thompson.

In Miami, Monfils had to retire against his compatriot Ugo Humbert after just a few games due to wrist pain - and after that there were rumors of his retirement.

Reason enough for Monfils to comment on the rumours: "So, am I making my comeback? Or am I about to quit tennis? To be clear, yes, I lost my first two games in the US. Yes, I then injured my wrist and had to give up my last match in Miami. Yes, it's disappointing, but it's not "a catastrophe" nor "devastating" as the media wrote. No, it's not a serious injury: it's inflammation associated with a neuromuscular problem. Infiltration, ultrasound and TECAR therapy should help me. And with any luck I'll be on the court at the Monte-Carlo Open in two weeks," Monfils wrote in a post published on his website.

And Monfils further shared: "I'm fine, I'm recovering, I haven't broken anything. I'm disappointed that my trip to the United States was cut short, but I loved my time on the pitch. And finally, even if I'm not ready to give up. There's always another game to come."

In 2016, Monfils achieved his best ever Monte Carlo result - when he reached the final but then lost to Rafael Nadal.
