The former number six in the world celebrated her last victory in a professional match a year ago. As the current number eleven in the world and looked after by the Austrian Richard Ruckelshausen, it was already defeated by Emil Ruusuvuori in five sets on Monday. For the 34-year-old it was the sixth defeat in a row.
At the press conference after the match, Monfils struggled with tears. He spoke of a nightmare in which he was trapped and the struggle to escape.

The video went viral on social media and Monfils received tons of positive responses. He was "overwhelmed" by the popularity, which his girlfriend Elina Svitolina also joined.
"As you can imagine, this is not an easy time for me," write Monfils on Twitter. "But I am full of confidence that I will hit back in the near future. The emotions after such a narrow defeat spilled over, especially because I invested many hours and my expectations were high."
Monfils would always come to the same conclusion: "Tennis is my greatest passion and I am blessed that I can make a living from it. Thanks to everyone, now it's time to get back to work."
