Marat Safin has a lot to tell

As a Russian, it is naturally impossible for Marat Safin to win a Grand Slam tournament in his home country. In his two biggest triumphs, Safin, who is expected as a star guest at "Kasi Live" (in our Instagram account "tennisnetnews") from 6 p.m. today, was able to spit two local heroes into the soup: 2000 at the US Open Pete Sampras, 2005 in Melbourne Lleyton Hewitt.

At the Australian Open in particular, Marat Safin always felt extremely comfortable during his active time: within four years he reached the final of the season's first major three times, losing to Thomas Johansson in 2002 and Roger Federer in 2004. It was then that Safin defeated him in an epic semi-final a year later, before winning the second and final Grand Slam title of his career against Hewitt.

Safin wins seven tournaments in 2000

Safin had his best year in 2000, when he won the trophy at an ATP tournament seven times in total, and besides winning at the US Open also in Barcelona or at the ATP Masters 1000 tournaments in Toronto and Paris-Bercy . Consequently, Safin also became number one in the world for the first time in November 2000. Sister Dinara did the same feat.

The grand appearance was never foreign to the charismatic Moscow, not even last year at the ATP Finals in London. Since Safin was presented alongside Boris Becker and Thomas Muster as one of three prominent team bosses for the ATP Cup, made it to the semi-finals with the Russian selection around Daniil Medvedev and Karen Khachanov, where, however, it was against the later winners from Serbia.
