Grigor Dimitrov has been the victim of a nasty attack in Barcelona. The world number 31 had that. announced on his Instagram account earlier in the week. "Thanks everyone for the nice messages. The most important thing is that I wasn't hurt," he wrote.
What happened? Dimitrov was in his car on the busy Avenida de Sarriá on his way back from training at around 9.30pm. As various media reports, a motorcyclist stopped next to Dimitrov and folded away his rear-view mirror. When Dimitrov opened the window and got outside to open it again, another man snatched the watch from his wrist. Specifically: a "Swiss Bianchet" worth almost 70,000 euros.
Dimitrov reported the robbery directly to the police, but the search has apparently been unsuccessful so far.
According to the Spanish media, behind this is a gang of criminals from Italy who travel to Barcelona and ambush tourists and stars for attacks of this kind.
Dimitrov in the company of Sebastian Vettel and Robert Lewandowski
Dimitrov is not the first victim: racing driver Sebastian Vettel was also robbed last year when thieves stole his backpack from the car in the hotel parking lot. Vettel himself had started the pursuit using the location function of his headphones, but in the end only found the headphones that the thieves had thrown out of the backpack.
Footballer Robert Lewandowski felt the same way as Dimitrov: a similarly expensive luxury watch was ripped from his arm while he was signing autographs from his car – on the FC Barcelona training ground.
For Dimitrov, the Barcelona week only went well to a limited extent in terms of tennis: he won his first match against Emilio Gomez in two sets, before he withdrew before the round of 16 against Alex de Minaur.
