France Davis Cup team captain Sebastian Grosjean said Gael Monfils originally wanted to play the Davis Cup. For the first time in a long time, none of the 'French Four Musketeers' (Monfils, Tsonga, Gasquet and Simon) were present. France had no problems, however. Arthur Rinderknech, Adrian Mannarino and Benjamin Bonzi all claimed individual wins, while Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut convinced in doubles.

“Unfortunately, Monfils has fallen ill. Actually he wanted to play. There are still six months to the group stage and there will be three Grand Slams, so we need to follow the results of all the players and pick the strongest ones. You gave a lot to the French team, it may be the end of a very good generation," said Grosjean.

Monfils' message via social media

Last week, Monfils announced he was skipping the Davis Cup due to minor health issues following his third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. "Hi everyone, I wanted to share some news with you after my recent break in tournaments," Monfils wrote on social media. “I had a small health problem (probably after my third dose of vaccine). On the advice of my doctor, I decided to take my time and rest. Unfortunately I can't play Davis Cup next week."
