The British woman of Jewish origin had won doubles at Wimbledon and Roland Garros with her black partner Althea Gibson in 1956. She was inducted into the Black Tennis Hall of Fame in 2015 for her relationship with Gibson, with whom she also had a lifelong friendship.
"It was wonderful to spend time with her and hear her words about Althea when her statue was unveiled last year. Rest in peace, a true champion," wrote former US tennis player Billie Jean King. Gibson's statue was unveiled in 2019. In 1956, she was the first black American woman to win a single Grand Slam title in Paris.
Buxton, who became a victim of anti-Semitism during her playing days, had to end her sporting career at the age of 22 due to an injury.
