Frances Tiafoe and Kei Nishikori were among the first to win. Tiafoe defeated Benoit Paire 6: 4, 6: 4, he now meets Sebastian Korda in an interesting second round. Ex-Top-10 man Nishikori defeated Joao Sousa 6: 7 (3), 6: 3 and 6: 2 after a set and break deficit and thus fixed a duel against Dan Evans.
Also next are Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, Alexei Popyrin and Vasek Pospisil. Mackenzie McDonald made a second round duel against the top seeded Daniil Medvedev with his 6: 3, 6: 3 win over James Duckworth.
Meanwhile, oldie Feliciano Lopez celebrated no sense of achievement in his record-breaking 139th Masters tournament - he was defeated by the American Tommy Paul with 3: 6 and 6: 7 (3).
Altmaier now meets Grigor Dimitrov
Daniel Altmaier and Philipp Kohlschreiber were already at the start in the evening hours of German time: Altmaier beat Sam Querrey 6: 2, 6: 4 and benefited from a proud 37 mistakes made by the American who made good appearances at the grass tournaments in Stuttgart and Mallorca is now in a losing streak of seven games. Altmaier now meets Grigor Dimitrov.
Philipp Kohlschreiber is eliminated after a 2: 6, 4: 6 against Taro Daniel.
Murray has his shoes back
Andy Murray, among others, will be at the start on Friday: He will meet Adrian Mannarino - and will be able to fall back on familiar shoes. After the theft of his tennis slippers including wedding ring, the thief apparently took heart - or showed an honest finder.
