There has been a lot of talk recently about Roger Federer's comeback. A possible start at the Australian Open was anyway rather wishful thinking from Australia, Federer clarified shortly afterwards: Even participation in the Wimbledon tournament in 2022 would be a sensation.
However, it had become quiet about another long-term injured: Juan Martin del Potro. The Argentine struggled with wrist problems almost throughout his career, and when these seemed stabilized after umpteen operations, he broke his kneecap. And then again. Further surgeries follow, in spite of ever-growing hopes.
Photos of Delpo playing tennis? Of course, his fans had always looked at them with great hopes, unfortunately often those that were not fulfilled. So now the next round: A few days ago, Del Potro again posted pictures of the work on the square. "Training," he commented succinctly. What does training look like, when does a comeback seem realistic? He kept himself - still - in silence.
Del Potro: Comeback in Cordoba?
Most recently, Marcelo Denti, the tournament director of the ATP event in Cordoba, threw a possible comeback of del Potro into the room at his tournament in February. Is that realistic?
One thing is clear: Del Potro would miss the Australian Open to the chagrin of his fans. On the other hand, he probably knows only too well that a hasty comeback won't bring anything. As Federer last said about his return: It really doesn't matter whether he comes back in 2022 or 2023.
Even for the Potro, now 33 years old, the time factor should be of secondary importance. The main thing is that he comes back one more time.
