It was September 2, 2020 when Kim Clijsters played her last match on the tour to date. At the US Open, the four-time individual Grand Slam winner of the Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova had to admit defeat in three sets, after which it was quiet about the Belgian. In October she had to undergo knee surgery, followed by an infection with the coronavirus in January - training backlog and numerous tournament cancellations were the result.
Now the 38-year-old wants to start another comeback attempt: As the organizers of the WTA 500 tournament in Chicago announced on Thursday, Clijsters will start in the third largest city in the USA thanks to a wildcard.
"Thanks for the wildcard. I'm looking forward to visiting Chicago for the first time and coming back on the tour," wrote Clijsters, who had already declared her career over twice in 2007 and 2012, on Twitter.
The Chicago tournament will run from September 27th to October 3rd. Aryna Sabalenka, Karolina Pliskova and Elina Svitolina have announced their participation.
