No, you don't want to hear it and certainly don't want to believe it, but the recent statements made by Roger Federer's agent Tony Godsick to the Swiss "Blick" don't sound exactly edifying. The 20-time Grand Slam champion, who had knee surgery last fall, encountered renewed joint problems in training for his comeback, which was planned for the Laver Cup in London at the end of September.
The journalist Simon Graf from the Tagesanzeiger first found out that the "Maestro" apparently had water in his knees again and for this reason could not achieve the desired intensity during training. Godsick then confirmed when asked: "Roger has been training for a few weeks and has pain in his knee. Nevertheless, he keeps trying and doesn't give up. He does fitness and plays tennis. He's still trying to prepare for the Laver Cup."
questions upon questions
The big question now is how much of those statements are a degree of "understatement" to take the pressure off of the difficult return to the competitive courts and how much of those statements should really be cause for concern. "FedEx" may only compete in doubles with his buddy Rafael Nadal - that is, if his wife is pregnant. will find its way to the O2 Arena.
questions upon questions. The Basel tournament director Roger Brennwald remains pragmatically positive: "He has been training for weeks and wants to start in London and also come to Basel. We will see at the Laver Cup whether his knee will hold up."
