Laura Siegemund beats French Open finalist Marketa Vondrousova

Laura Siegemund provided a strong exclamation mark on Sunday. The 32-year-old defeated Marketa Vondrousova in three sets, 6: 3, 6: 7 (3), 6: 4 in the 1st round of the Western & Southern Open in New York. Siegemund had slipped into the main field as a qualifier, Vondrousova was seeded at number 10.

In the second round of the hard court tournament, the Russian Vera Zvonareva is waiting. After winning the first set, Siegemund was leading 5: 4 in the second round and served the match, but had to admit defeat in the tie-break. In the decision she made four games in a row after a 2: 4 deficit.

At the beginning of the match, Siegemund got into the anger of the tournament officials because she illegally threw water bottles to her coach.

Siegemund had played her first WTA tournament in Palermo at the beginning of August after a five-month forced Corona break. In Palermo and a week later in Prague, Siegemund ended in the round of 16.

The Western and Southern Open are the dress rehearsal for the US Open (from August 31st). The pros are in a "bubble" in New York due to the corona pandemic.

The German top player Angelique Kerber is not at the start of the tournament, which has been moved from Cincinnati to New York. In the men's category, Davis Cup player Jan-Lennard Struff (Warstein) won the first round on Saturday against Australian Alex de Minaur (6: 2, 6: 4). In doubles on Sunday he lost to Felix Auger-Aliassime and Milos Raonic (both Canada) in the match tie-break with world-class doubles player Nicolas Mahut (France). Alexander Zverev meets former world number one Andy Murray (Great Britain) after a bye in the second round.
