Leandro Riedi - the end of a strong series

After two Challenger titles at the end of 2022, Leandro Riedi failed in Canberra just before the triple. The young Swiss can still be satisfied.

Switzerland will travel without Stan Wawrinka to meet Germany in the Davis Cup on February 4th and 5th in Trier. That's not good news for fans, after all, the three-time Major champion has played pretty close to legendary status. But Severin Lüthi prefers to focus on youth. And to his currently best-placed player, Marc-Andrea Huesler.

In fact, Stan Wawrinka is 137th in the current ATP charts, only number four among the Swiss. Behind Huesler (number 56), Dominic Stricker (117) and Leandro Riedi (133). At the beginning of the 2023 season, he picked up exactly where he left off at the end of the previous one.

Riedi wins 16 consecutive Challenger singles matches

Even if not quite: Because in the final of the ATP Challenger tournament in Canberra there was little to get against Marton Fucsovics at 5: 7 and 4: 6. But on the way to the final, Leandro Riedi defeated Jan-Lennard Struff, for example, who is still a house number on the international tennis scene.

The win against Struff in the Canberra semifinals was the 16th in a row for 20-year-old Riedi on the Challenger tour. The winning streak began in Helsinki, where Riedi won the tournament after qualifying. Just like a few days later in Andria. What does that mean for the upcoming qualification for the Australian Open? It's just that nobody would like to play against the youngster who is pumped full of self-confidence. The first opponent will be eighth seeded Dutchman Tim van Rijthoven.

Whether that also applies to the German team in Trier remains to be seen. Because Riedi still has Stricker and Huesler ahead of him in the individual.
