The Russian Maria Sharapova renounces the Olympic Games in Tokyo. Instead, London's 2012 silver medalist will be in Newport Beach on July 28 and 29 for the Orange County Breakers' World Team Tennis League - these two days fall right into the week of the Olympics.
"I'm delighted to be back at the Breakers, the competition in World Team Tennis is always strong and I'm looking forward to returning to a team," said Sharapova, who made her ninth appearance at the 1973 since existing Event will be.
Rumors about possible resignation
With the abandonment of the Olympics, the rumors of an imminent resignation of Sharapova should not be less. At the end of her doping ban, the Russian never returned to her former strength and is only 131rd due to injuries in the WTA ranking.
Contrary to these rumors, the 32-year-old will attend an invitation tournament in Abu Dhabi in December this year. After that, the Australian Open will be on the program for the Russian - but Sharapova needs a wild card for a direct place in the peloton due to her bad world ranking.
