McHale, Petko, Querrey: Williams isn't the only one retiring from the 2022 US Open
Serena Williams' farewell to active tennis was of course the topic of the previous US Open. But some other players also said goodbye to tennis in 2022. And there will be a few more to come in the near future...

Andrea Petkovic bowed out early in the tournament, while ex-Top 15 man Sam Querrey made his final appearance at Flushing Meadows before turning to other pursuits, perhaps even dancing. Many tennis fans remember him primarily as the winner over Novak Djokovic at the 2016 Wimbledon tournament - and of course for this pearl, as part of the TV show Millionaire Matchmaker in search of great love .
Lara Arruabarrena and Kirsten Flipkens also played their final tournament in New York, as did the American Christina McHale.
2022: The year of farewells - and the big chunks are yet to come...
They all join a year of farewells to prominent names - above all that of Serena Williams and of course Ashleigh Barty: She had declared her departure from tennis in the spring , as world number 1 and at only 25 years of age.
There were also Olympic champion Monica Puig, 2011 US Open winner Sam Stosur, Laura Robson, CiCi Bellis, Kim Clijsters again, US Open champ 2009 Juan Martin del Porto, Kevin Anderson, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Tommy Robredo . Big names, many of them (longtime) top 10 players.
And the big end is probably only to come when you look at the age of the "Big Four": Roger Federer, 41, wants to attack again in the fall and still play in 2023, it seems, but he's not running away from age either . Rafael Nadal, 36, has also arrived earlier in his career, Novak Djokovic, 35, and Andy Murray, 35, possibly in late summer...
The next few years: They will not be easy for emotional tennis fans...
