On Thursday there was an impromptu press appointment with Chris Evert, one of the great icons in women's tennis. Eurosport had invited, Evert mainly commented on the upcoming French Open. In the end, however, one of the journalists asked whether the WTA was doing enough to address the physical and mental problems of its athletes.

As if to prove that things are amiss in this respect, a few hours later came Amanda Anisimova's announcement that she had to take time off from the tennis circuit due to mental problems. "It has become unbearable for me to be in tennis tournaments," writes the American. "My mental health is currently a priority." Which is why she will take a break. The 21-year-old played her last match in Miami against Madison Brengle.

Anisimova is in line with players like Naomi Osaka or Garbine Muguruza. Osaka had taken longer breaks, made comeback attempts in between, and is currently expecting the birth of her first child. Muguruza, on the other hand, extended her sabbatical just a few days ago.

Incidentally, Chris Evert sees the players being very well looked after physically at the tournaments. Psychologically, things are more difficult. What certainly doesn't help is the omnipresence of social media. Evert knows very well from her internet-free time how quickly burn-out can occur: It was precisely for this reason that Andrea Jaeger's hopeful career fell short.
