In terms of the result, McDonald won quite clearly 6:1, 6:4 against Dimitrov, who was seeded 26th in Miami. The American will meet Alexander Zverev in round 3.
Zverev had previously prevailed in his opening game against Borna Coric in three contested sets.
McDonald is not a well-known face on the tour: he first played in the top 100 in 2018, but then said goodbye to the top 200 tennis players in the world in 2020. In 2021 he caught up again with a round of 16 at the Australian Open and improved with good Challenger results. At the ATP tournament in Washington he had reached the final, in which he was only just inferior to Jannik Sinner.
At the beginning of the year he was briefly in the top 50 for the first time.
Zverev leads 2-0 in a direct comparison against McDonald, he won the games in 2018 in Acapulco (6: 3, 7: 5) and 2022 in Montpellier (6: 2, 7: 6 (5)).
Kyrgios now meets Fabio Fognini
In addition to Nick Kyrgios' surprising win over Andrey Rublev, especially in terms of clarity , Cameron Norrie, Pablo Carreno Busta and Fabio Fognini also won their games on Friday - Fognini is now playing in a very appealing match against Kyrgios.
Diego Schwartzman was eliminated after beating Thanasi Kokkinakis 6:4, 6:7 (3) and 4:6. John Isner lost to Hugo Gaston.
In action today: Medvedev, Murray, Tsitsipas, Alcaraz
On Saturday, Daniil Medvedev and Andy Murray will contest an expectant duel from 5 p.m. CET. Stefanos Tsitsipas (against JJ Wolf), Taylor Fritz (against Mikhail Kukushkin), Denis Shapovalov (against Lloyd Harris) and Carlos Alcaraz (against Marton Fucsovicz) are also in action.
