"It all depends on what the rules are and how the Indian Wells ranking is updated," said Raonic. The transition to the old regulation should take place at the first Masters tournament of the coming season. Normally the ranking points of tournaments fall out of the valuation after 12 months. Since the tournament calendar is basically the same every year, points from the previous year are automatically replaced with those from the current edition of an event.

However, this rule was suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic: Players can currently only earn points for the ranking. Results from the past are not deleted. The ATP wants to ensure that travel restrictions do not affect the ranking. This passage is valid until the event in Indian Wells. It is also the tournament that was one of the first to be canceled last March.

"If it stays that way and there is a prospect of a full season, I'll probably play a lot less of the 250s and 500s," said Raonic. "I don't have to worry about" zeros "suddenly appearing in my ranking. The conditions of not being able to leave the hotel room are psychologically not healthy for me. I need some space."

At the Masters in Paris-Bercy, Raonic failed only in the semifinals against the eventual tournament winner Daniil Medvedev. At the Cincinnati tournament, Raonic even reached the final. The former number three in the world is currently in 14th place. Besides Raonic, many other top players could play even less often in smaller tournaments in the future.
