Australian tennis pro Nick Kyrgios is due to appear in court on October 4th. A judge in the Australian capital Canberra set this date on Tuesday after rejecting a request for a further postponement. Kyrgios is accused of assault. The Wimbledon finalist had originally been summoned to appear before the district court on August 2, but his lawyer was able to obtain a three-week stay.
During Wimbledon it became known that Kyrgios was allegedly injured after an incident in December 2021. At Wimbledon, on the advice of his lawyers, Kyrgios did not comment on the allegations.
Kyrgios in preparation for the US Open
Kyrgios, who is preparing for the US Open, was represented on Tuesday by his lawyer Michael Kukulies-Smith, who wanted to delay the appointment until the end of November. However, Judge Louise Taylor said she had been asked to adjourn the case for unknown reasons.
Furthermore, Kyrgios is threatened with a lawsuit for defamation. During his four-set defeat in the Wimbledon final on July 10 against Novak Djokovic, the 26-year-old asked the referee to throw out a spectator. Anna Palus accused Kyrgios on Tuesday afternoon of having made a "completely unfounded allegation" against her and spoke of the "considerable damage" her family suffered as a result.
Kyrgios called Palus drunk and disruptive in his first Grand Slam final. The 32-year-old wants to donate the damages to charity.
