Nick Kyrgios is by no means a man whose participation can be expected to be a calm, unexcited afternoon of tennis - not even and especially in a Grand Slam final. At least that has been clear since Wimbledon 2022, where the man from Canberra was in the final of a major tournament for the first time. And where he should not lose out without something to talk about despite a strong performance with 1: 3 sets against the big favorite and 21-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic.
Negative climax: Kyrgios' verbal disregard for a spectator who - according to the Australian's interpretation - should have consumed 700 alcoholic drinks before and during the final. In any case, this would justify their behavior, said Kyrgios, who felt increasingly irritated by the visitor in the final. And this - in Kyrgios' style - of course also announced loudly. Much to the envy of the viewer: Anna Palus.
Kyrgios apologizes - and donates
Who did not want to put up with this gaffe in front of a world audience and quickly announced legal action against the 27-year-old Australian. He defamed her - and that in front of potentially millions of viewers. Now this legal dispute has been settled, Kyrgios has apologized to the woman: According to Kyrgios, he was irritated by her and had the feeling that Paulus was drunk during the game. "I admit that I was wrong and I apologize for that," says the 27-year-old now.
The fine that would have flowed to the enfant terrible for his gaffe has now been donated at the viewer's request, as Krygios also explained: "In reparation, I have donated £20,000 to Great Ormond Street Hospital, a charity chosen by Ms Palus," so the 27 year old. Who would now like to consider the issue as settled. "I will not comment further on this matter."
