The fact that Novak Djokovic had even been drawn into the 128 grid (which has 96 players) had caused astonishment. Because in Indian Wells a complete vaccination protection is required as a condition of participation. And as we know, Djokovic doesn't have that (yet?). On Wednesday, however, the 20-time Grand Slam champion finally provided clarity and withdrew his entry for the first 1000 event of the year. The start in Dubai, where Djokovic surprisingly lost to Jiri Vesely in the quarterfinals, will remain the only one in the 2022 calendar year for the time being.
Grigor Dimitrov now slips to the bottom of the grid, and a lucky loser should follow in his place. In fact, there is now Mikhail Kukushkin, who remained successful in qualifying. Dimitrov is the highest-ranked unseeded player at Indian Wells.
Speaking of qualification: veteran Philipp Kohlschreiber has also booked a place in the main draw, as have Thanasi Kokkinakis and the young Dane Holger Rune.
