The regular ATP world rankings are slowly taking on the form that corresponds to the actual strength ratios of the last twelve months. Some legacy issues are still carried along, Dominic Thiem, for example, can still enjoy 500 points for his triumph in Indian Wells. The truth about the current season, however, is reflected in the two annual ratings: The Race to Turin for the general class. And the Race to Turin for those players who have not yet reached the age of 21.
Brandon Nakashima belongs to this group, the American celebrates his 20th birthday today, Tuesday. Nakashima has stormed into the top 100 of the ATP charts with successive finals in Los Cabos and Atlanta, and is sixth in the youth race. And as one of three Americans, he would have a place at the # NextGen Masters. The other two aspirants are Sebastian Korda and Jenson Brooksby.
Sinner with hopes for the ATP Finals?
The ranking is led by Jannik Sinner , who got off to a strong start in 2021, but has recently stumbled a little. Last week in Atlanta, Sinner had to admit defeat to Christopher O'Connell at his first appearance. The idea that the South Tyrolean, alongside Matteo Berrettini, is a second host at the ATP Finals in Turin will only bear fruit if Sinner scores well at the upcoming ATP Masters 1000 tournaments. Even better, of course, at the US Open.
Lorenzo Musetti has good prospects for at least Milan as fourth in the # NextGen annual charts. According to the current count, the three remaining starting places would go to Félix Auger-Aliassmime , Carlos Alcaraz and Juan Manuel Cerundolo. With the exception of Musetti, Cerundolo and Alcaraz, the entire #NextGen top will be at the start in Washington this week.
