With a 1000-point lead over Rafael Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz currently seems quite comfortable in the world rankings. At the ATP Finals in Turin, however, there are still 1,500 points available, so a change at the top of the ATP ranking at the last tournament of the year cannot be ruled out. Especially since Alcaraz had to cancel his participation in the season finale due to a torn muscle in his left abdominal wall .
In order to displace Alcaraz from the top of the world rankings at the ATP Finals, Nadal needs at least one final participation in Turin. But this would only be enough if he won each of his three matches in the group phase. In the event of a defeat and two wins, the 22-time Grand Slam winner would be dependent on winning the tournament.
Tsitsipas must win titles without defeat
Stefanos Tsitsipas also has an outside chance. To jump to the top of the world rankings, the 24-year-old would have to win the title unbeaten at the ATP Finals. In view of the strong field of participants, a Herculean task in the truest sense of the word.
Alcaraz therefore has a good chance of ending 2022 as the industry leader. In the unlikely event that both Nadal and Tsitsipas reach the final in Turin without defeat and the Greek then wins it, the 19-year-old would even fall back to third place.
