On Sunday, Rafael Nadal appeared where he said he would see himself regularly at some point in the perhaps not too distant future: in the presidential box at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid. However, not as a guest like at the match between his favorite club Real Madrid and Real Sociedad, but as president of the record winner of the Champions League.
However, it could still take a few moons until then. Because Florentino Perez is currently filling the role of Real President. On the other hand, Nadal also wants to make a difference in terms of sport. Speculation about whether the Spanish grandmaster might return to the final round of the Davis Cup in Málaga has been put to rest by the miserable elimination of David Ferrer's team in the intermediate round in Valencia. So it will probably be the start of the 2024 season when Nadal picks up the racket for the first time since his exit at the Australian Open against Mackenzie McDonald earlier this year.
And the actual plan was: for one last hurrah. But Nadal no longer sounded quite so definitive in an interview with Movistar Plus. "If I told you that 2024 would be my last year... who knows? What if my body suddenly recovers and I feel strong and full of energy? Once I know the answer, I will too "I live from day to day," said the 23-time Grand Slam champion.
And further: "I hope that in about two and a half months, around mid-November, I will have clarity about where I am and how the injury is improving. At the moment I'm just recovering. I'm training 40 minutes a day , three times a week. And I work a lot in the gym."
