He said it when he said goodbye to his career at the Laver Cup at the end of September: "I will not be a ghost. I want my fans to know that they will see me again." And when it's within his capabilities, a Roger Federer also keeps his promises. At his home tournament in Basel, however, it was still too early for the 20-time Grand Slam champion to present himself to his compatriots.
So shortly after his official retirement from the team competition in London's O2 Arena, the impressions were still too overwhelming to be able to give enough space to celebrate at home. "I've tried to digest everything that's happened lately. There will definitely be a celebration at my home tournament, it has a very special meaning, but it's too early for me to London now," said the Swiss of the day -Indicator.
Duel with legend Shingo Kunieda
For all tennis aficionados in the Far East, however, there may soon be a reunion with the maestro. The Swiss, together with the outfitter Uniqlo, organized an exhibition for "Uniqlo's LifeWear Day Tokyo 2022" in the Ariake Coliseum in the Japanese capital.
As part of the event, which takes place in the same location as the traditional ATP World Tour 500 tournament in Tokyo, the former and long-standing number one in the tennis world will compete against living wheelchair legend Shingo Kunieda. With 21 Grand Slam victories, the 38-year-old Japanese even has one more on his account than "FedEx" itself - and that's not even counting Kunieda's 20 double major triumphs.
