At the age of 37, it's over - at least in singles: Samantha Stosur will play her last tournament as a single player at the Australian Open 2022. The US Open winner of 2011 announced this on Wednesday via Instagram.
"I'm so excited and very grateful that I will be able to play my 20th Australian Open in a few weeks. A huge thank you to Tennis Australia for the opportunity to end my individual career in my home Grand Slam. It really means a lot to me a lot to play in front of my family, friends and the Australian fans who have been with me through thick and thin, "wrote Stosur.
The Australian had already received a wildcard from tournament director Craig Tiley in the past few weeks. "I'm sure I will have mixed emotions. But I would not have asked otherwise because I always thought that I would stop playing in Australia," said Stosur.
But Stosur does not want to completely hang up the bat just yet. In doubles, she plans to complete the entire year 2022. And for good reason: Last season, the 37-year-old triumphed alongside Zhang Shuai at both the WTA 1000 tournament in Cincinnati and the US Open.
