Tuesday's match schedule at the combined event in Rome is peppered with players from Italy, be it in the men's qualifiers or in the women's main draw matches. One local hero, however, can sit back and prepare for her first challenge: Sara Errani, now 36, and the only Italian to have reached the singles final at the Foro Italico in the past 35 years.
The Italians had a really golden generation to celebrate: with Francesca Schiavone, who won the title at the French Open. With Flavia Pennettta, who celebrated her greatest success in New York City in 2015. And with Roberta Vinci who, after her tennis career, tried her hand at the World Padel Tour from time to time. At the moment, the highest hopes are probably resting on Martina Trevisan and the incredibly talented and even more incredibly unstable Camila Giorgi.
Errani against Swiatek in round two
"I don't have any more goals, really," Errani explained in the run-up to the traditional tournament in Rome. “In my head, I just want to enjoy it, create beautiful memories. I play because I love tennis and I like being on the court. As long as I can, I will do it too.”
The draw actually didn't mean it badly with Sara Errani. The first game will be against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who hasn't really gotten into the swing of things in recent months after an injury. After that, a real highlight match would be waiting with Iga Swiatek. And with it the defending champion, against whom Errani can take a few memories with him with a clear conscience.
