The 23-year-old has to return the prize money she received afterwards, and she also loses the world ranking points earned during this period.
Haddad Maia, who caused a sensation last year with her first round victory at Wimbledon against the future Australian Open finalist Garbine Muguruza (Spain), refrained from opening the B-test. She admitted to eating contaminated supplements. Two prohibited substances were detected in the A sample. Over the past four years, three other Brazilian tennis professionals have been convicted of doping, including former top 30 player Thomaz Bellucci.
Beatriz Haddad Maia was ranked 147th in the world rankings before her suspension by the ITF, her highest position was 58th in September 2017. So far she has not won a tournament.
Just a few weeks ago, Nicholas Jarry and double player Robert Farah were banned for doping. However, Farah has now been acquitted because the ITF believed in Farah's account of how the test had turned out to be positive.
