Not a word should be lost here about the last match in Tommy Robredo's professional career - just this much: It took place on a worthy stage. Namely at the ATP Tour 500 tournament in Barcelona. Robredo will be 40 years old in May, a good time to devote himself to new tasks. In any case, the Spaniard has achieved amazing things on the tennis court - and has worked his way up to fifth place in the ATP world rankings.
In his 23-year career, Robredo has won a total of 533 singles matches. Which puts him in sixth place in the all-time Spanish list. Behind Rafael Nadal , David Ferrer, Manuel Orantes, Carlos Moya and Fernando Verdasco. Robredo won his first of a total of twelve titles as a 19-year-old in Sopot, and in his best season, 2006, he qualified for the ATP Finals.
Wins against Federer and Djokovic
Robredo also likes to remember his victory against Roger Federer at the US Open 2013 or the success against Novak Djokovic a year later in Cincinnati. In 2013 at Roland Garros, Tommy Robredo managed to turn three matches in a row from a 2-0 set deficit: in round two against Igor Sijsling, then against Gael Monfils, followed by Nicolas Almagro.
The Spanish veteran naturally finds it only fitting that things are now coming to an end in his immediate homeland. “There is no better place to retire than here. The time has come. Last year I still wasn't ready. I thought I could play a little more but didn't want to do it without fans. So I am much happier that I was able to say goodbye this year the way I had imagined.”
